Hard drive 1/2 full ALREADY?

Post by schermozzel »

I have a [reasonably] new computer. It has a 200Gb hd inside it. I regularly check my hd for how much free space I have on there [a habbit from previosly having a laptop with a ridiculously small hd on it] Imagine my suprise when i go on properties of my HD and it's nearly 1/2 full!! I do not have lots on there though! So i open the HD too look at the individal folders in there. When I added up the sizes of these folders I only get a total of 22Gb but the pie chart in HD properties quotes a value of over 80Gb!! What is causing this HUGE inconsistency?

Try this program, it will give you a better idea on what files are on you're hard drive. I have found Sequoia View helpfull in finding out information on the drive. http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/ You can also do an advanced search and see how many files are created in a day, if you have a virus you can create 100's in and hour. Try looking for files created today, then let the computer sit on for a few hours unconnected to the internet, search again and compair results. Let us know what happens
If I could remember all I have forgotten, I would be a smart man.

Right, ok. I downloaded that programme and that was getting confused also. it said my disk size was 200Gb, the free space was 101Gb but the used space only came to 26Gb or something! Weird! Here is the confuzed screenshot of that programme! Anyway there was obviously something badly wrong! I realised I hadn't tried checking for errors. So I ran the disk scan [which was so slow, it took forever!] Anyway it seems to have sorted itself out now so that is ok!

Glad you figgured it out with disk scan. The Sequoia view look confusing, but when you do a scan as you pictured, you can move the mouse over each block and it will let you know what file it is. By clicking on the file you can see what it is even open up them, you can even see what is taking up the most disk space.
