my desktop doesnt work (windows XP)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the only way for me to activate programs is to press ctrl alt + delet and click start new task. when i log on there is no start menu or shortcuts/clock all i can see is my desktop back ground but even if i right click on it nothing happens. how do i get my desktop back ????

A quick fix so that you can see your start menu, etc. is to do what you have been doing, then execute explorer.exe. This will bring up your icons, task bar, start menu, and everything else. However, this won't really fix your problem - it sounds like you may have spyware, or a virus. There are numerous postings in this forum that can tell you how to deal with those, but I will start off by recommending Spybot - Search & Destroy, available from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
