Desktop War
To settle the argument over the best CPUs, there will be a Desktop War. The rules in this war is that your PC must cost $1000 or lower. It must consist of the desktop and the components inside. CCB056 will be the judge on which PCs beat it. In the prices, include shipping and taxes if any. Also have hyper links on your objects.
PS: You will use Intel CPU-based PCs.
Here is mine:
$25.00 Case
$105.50 Antec True550
$61.99 Shuttle AN35N Ultra
$193.15 AMD Athlon XP 3200 (All 3200s are the same, the company this one is from forgot to put 400MHz FSB.)
$10.00 AMD Athlon XP 3200 Heatsink
$8.00 Artic Silver 5
$168.00 2 512MB Corsair PC3200 (800MHz)
$310.00 nVidia PNY GeForce FX 5950 Ultra w/ 256MB DDR
$66.00 Western Digital 40GB Hard Drive w/ 8MB Cache
$31.00 Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM Drive
Total: $978.64

This post is really outdated.
Most of my links don't exist anymore.
AMD64s now rule the market.
If you want, I can make a new "desktop war."
Tebow2000, ATI is the Intel VPU.
nVidia is for AMD fans.
Here is my updated system:
$70.99 AeroCool AeroEngine-C SS
$94.49 Antec True480Blue
$117.99 Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939
$149.00 AMD Athlon 64 3000 (90nm)
$39.98 Gigabyte 3D Rocket Cooler
$129.98 OCZ Dual 256MB PC-3200 Enhanced Latency Series Dual Channeled Optimized RAMs
$228.99 XFX nVidia GeForce 6600GT AGP
$93.19 Western Digital 120GB 8MB Cache 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
$67.99 Lite-On SOHW-1633S Black (16X Dual Layer DVD Burner)
Total: $993.10
Also, 2 sticks is better than 1. Ever thought about dual channel. Your RAM speed is only 533MHz while mine is 800MHz.

But AMD is still closer to nVidia until nVidia launches their Intel chipset.
Intel is closer to ATI bacause ATI is more popular than nVidia like Intel is more popular than AMD.

Can't wait.
I like the idea of nVidia going universal, being a universal person myself.
Remember, SLI will be included!

Might try the $10 cooling fan for it no biggy there. That'd put you under the mark easy!
Now as far as making a P4 system for this price nope no way! I wouldn't get much of the preformance as I would this system! I started PC's as an Intel guy (80286) whent to Cirix in the 386-486 era, AMD 486-DX2 66 then Pentium 60 (OC'd 90) then AMD 133, 300, 500, 1.4ghz, dual 1.9ghz, 2.8ghz that's my Personal Processor history.
