Please help with bizzare PC problem

Post by afurch »

Hey all, Please help. About two days ago my net access suddenly dropped out. I am running my PC through a cable modem and a network switch (in the basement). So I confirmed that signal is getting through to the computer by hooking up this old laptop-same cable and everything-and it works fine. Plug it back into the desktop, and no go. Since then I have tried all the usual suspects: 1. I got a new network card - Nope 2 I reformatted the hard drive and installed a clean Windows XP - Nope. 3. In desperation I got a new motherboard - nope. Very Weird. Basically a new computer. If I open Network settings it shows that the cable is connected, but when I try to Repair it says it cant find service. I know that there is service because I unplug it from the back and into my laptop, and it works fine. Any ideas?

Try purchasing a router, not using a switch.. sometimes, switches overload, like mine did, and has trouble communicating data through its stream

From command prompt run ipconfig and tell me if it comes back with no address or a 169.x.x.x...Thanks and we'll get you fixed up, Austin
