Windows Media Player not working

"An internal application error has occurred." That is the error message I get when I try to run Windows Media Player. Also, when I try to use Windows Movie Maker 2 the player is non-responsive and the buttons do not highlight and I can not press them. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. This issue has existed for quite a while and I just can't go on using my computer because so many things are Windows Media Player only on here.

I would do a repair install of windows boot from your XP cd, don;t choose the first repair option, but the secod one, the one that is displayed after you choose to install windows, when it asks which partition you want windows installed on
