I am trying to do the scan disk at startup but the message "Cannot open volume for direct access" appears and the check wont work, after few seconds normal startup continues. Now every time I restart the same message appears. Im running an Athlon 800, 256mb ram, Windows XP home edition. I'm still able to run disk defrag!! I figures reformattting my hard drive would fix it, nope, the scan disk problem still exists!!! Thanks in advance

Running XP on anything under 256 is asking for trouble. I'm surprised your computer starts up at all. Anyway, why not just wait to log in to scan disk.
What file system do you have NTFS or FAT32?
Who made your drive? Goto their website and download their diagnostic and then do an extended test to see if the hard drive is bad.
