Win XP - extremely high CPU Usage
Win XP - extremely high CPU Usage
Hi there - I'm running a Pentium 4 2.66GHz with 512MB RAM. For the last while, just out of the blue, my CPU usage shoots up to just about 100% - with the fan working overtime - and then stays there for a long time, even if I have nothing other than an IRC chatroom, Outlook and a few browser pages open.
When I look at the Windows Task Manager it shows that iexplorer.exe is the guilty party - there is normally 2 or 3 occurrances but only one has a high CPU usage of 80 to 90%.
Here's my HijackThis - if someone could maybe have a look and have any suggestions I'll be very thankfull!

spyware or virus
the only explanation i can come up with is you have a large amount of spyware, or your have a virus/many viruses.
for microsoft anti spyware use this site, i like it better than other antispyware programs.

O16 - DPF: {63337480-F789-11CE-86F8-0020AFD8C6DB} (/n software - IPWorks! V6 TraceRoute Control) - http://www.mweb.co.za/services/adslconsole/tracrt60.ocx - Possibly nasty
Do you know this entry, something in Africa? If not fix and let me know how it works.

You might want to consider upping you're ram, to 1 gig this may help. In todays computer enviroment with high speed connections having a few apps open and web pages can at times use alot of resources. This is magnified by the fact that web pages may have flash or Java that can boost the need for more CPU use and or video use.

Do you have a virus scanning software that is set to scan in the background while you run? I often have complaints for some of the users here that at times it becomes hard to open web pages at times. This was tracked down to the schedualed time for the network virus scan. They will scan on all computers at the same time.
Here is another thought, if this happens alot, go to the start/run/ type "msconfig" without the "" go to the selective startup and hide all Microsoft devices. Now look at the list, uncheck the apps you don't know what they are. Restart and dissreguard the messages, just click thru and see how it runs, do you have the same problems. You can go back in as above and check back in the apps that you dissabled and selecting afew of the dissabled apps allow them to restart. Do this intill you find the app that is causeing you problems, you can leave it dissabled, or you can un install it too.
