Win XP - extremely high CPU Usage

Post by krugie »

Hi there - I'm running a Pentium 4 2.66GHz with 512MB RAM. For the last while, just out of the blue, my CPU usage shoots up to just about 100% - with the fan working overtime - and then stays there for a long time, even if I have nothing other than an IRC chatroom, Outlook and a few browser pages open. When I look at the Windows Task Manager it shows that iexplorer.exe is the guilty party - there is normally 2 or 3 occurrances but only one has a high CPU usage of 80 to 90%. Here's my HijackThis - if someone could maybe have a look and have any suggestions I'll be very thankfull! Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:53:03, on 05/10/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\QtDTAcer.EXE C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb06.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\NCLTools\NclTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ICO.EXE C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\Msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Services\ServiceLayer.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\Billionton\Bluetooth Software\BTTray.exe C:\Program Files\Nokia\PC Suite for Nokia 6600\connmngmntbox.exe C:\Program Files\Nokia\PC Suite for Nokia 6600\ectaskscheduler.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Nokia\PCSUIT~1\Elogerr.exe C:\Program Files\Intuwave\Shared\mRouterRunTime\mRouterRuntime.exe C:\Program Files\Billionton\Bluetooth Software\bin\btwdins.exe C:\PROGRA~1\BILLIO~1\BLUETO~1\BTSTAC~1.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxssvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Nokia\PCSUIT~1\BROADC~1.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Nokia\PCSUIT~1\SCRFS.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE C:\Program Files\pirch98\pirch98.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Johan\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://zuazlxjeysuwgbafdfjo.net//r8EKMm ... blVs/T.asp R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.singletravel.co.za/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://global.acer.com/ R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AGRSMMSG] AGRSMMSG.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LManager] C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\QtDTAcer.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPLpr] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS Tray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS KHooker] C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb06.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PinnacleDriverCheck] C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSDrvCheck.exe -CheckReg O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmcService] C:\PROGRA~1\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe -startgui O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Nokia Tray Application] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\NCLTools\NclTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mouse Suite 98 Daemon] ICO.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NBJ] "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\NBJ.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\PROGRA~1\MESSEN~1\Msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O4 - Global Startup: BTTray.lnk = ? spyware or virus

Post by jessegraham »

the only explanation i can come up with is you have a large amount of spyware, or your have a virus/many viruses. for microsoft anti spyware use this site, i like it better than other antispyware programs. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

The log has on entry in it you should look at/fix O16 - DPF: {63337480-F789-11CE-86F8-0020AFD8C6DB} (/n software - IPWorks! V6 TraceRoute Control) - http://www.mweb.co.za/services/adslconsole/tracrt60.ocx - Possibly nasty Do you know this entry, something in Africa? If not fix and let me know how it works.

mweb.co.za is my ISP so it should be OK - I guess it has something to do with my DSL connection?

You might want to consider upping you're ram, to 1 gig this may help. In todays computer enviroment with high speed connections having a few apps open and web pages can at times use alot of resources. This is magnified by the fact that web pages may have flash or Java that can boost the need for more CPU use and or video use.

Thanks - I am thinking about doing that. But the CPU will shoot up even when I have no applications running and only one or two standard pages like cnn etc open.

Do you have a virus scanning software that is set to scan in the background while you run? I often have complaints for some of the users here that at times it becomes hard to open web pages at times. This was tracked down to the schedualed time for the network virus scan. They will scan on all computers at the same time. Here is another thought, if this happens alot, go to the start/run/ type "msconfig" without the "" go to the selective startup and hide all Microsoft devices. Now look at the list, uncheck the apps you don't know what they are. Restart and dissreguard the messages, just click thru and see how it runs, do you have the same problems. You can go back in as above and check back in the apps that you dissabled and selecting afew of the dissabled apps allow them to restart. Do this intill you find the app that is causeing you problems, you can leave it dissabled, or you can un install it too.
