Problems running windows and recovery console

Hi, I have this problem running windows on my laptop so what I have been doing is booting from the Windows XP Home CD so that I can perform the recovery console. When I press R to repar it goes to Dos Prompt and say's the following. "The path or file specified is not valid" I tried again and this time if I pressed enter instead of R to intsall XP I get this:- "28616 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi" <setup cannot access this disk> What does this mean? could it be a software problem or the hardware problem because I can't run windows on my laptop anymore. check to see if the cd is scratched and if it isnt, try reformating the entire hard drive in ntfs and start over.
